The science behind the scan.
Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) has been studied in clinical and research contexts for over a decade. Hemoglobin absorbs light differently depending on oxygenation state, and as blood pulses through facial capillaries, it modulates the intensity of ambient light reflecting off the skin.
What has changed is the compute. Ganance's signal processing pipeline isolates the cardiac signal from noise — motion artifact, uneven lighting, skin tone variation — using blind source separation, adaptive filtering, and a motion-robust rPPG model trained on a diverse population dataset.
